As I've noted before, if you don’t turn off push notifications, Duolingo pings you relentlessly to do your daily practice and bombards you with passive-aggressive messaging.
Am expecting a "You've Let Yourself Down" any day now.
I could, of course, disable the notifications, but I've been observing them for research purposes. I additionally installed the widget, which changes throughout the day according to how long you let things go on without doing your daily session, as per a few days ago:
| Monday at 2pm |
| 2:50pm |
| 5pm |
| 5:50pm |
| 7:15pm |
| 7:40pm: happy Duo. I cracked and practised. |
A day or so later, I rashly let it go even later into the evening:
| 9pm |
And in fact then forgot to do my practice, with the result that I awoke to this 'frozen wastes' image:
Plenty of people seem to have reported feeling vaguely threatened by the Duolingo owl, e.g. this Mashable piece that begins "The Duolingo owl is ruining my life". There seem to have been some panicked responses to this 2019 tweet, including "Is the Duo owl coming to kill me in my sleep?" and "Please stop I'll do anything I'll even learn Spanish".
